Zaskakujący pełnowymiarowy debiut reżysera zaprawionego w krótkich formach.

Film funkcjonuje pod dwoma anglojęzycznymi tytułami - ówdzie jako The Wakhan Front, a gdzie indziej pod będącym wiernym tłumaczeniem oryginału.

Rewelacyjnym pomysłem jest wrzucenie widza w specyfikę sytuacji przez pokazywanie obrazu z noktowizorów i tego typu urządzeń. Mamy wtedy swoiście militarny sposób oglądu (przypominają się te obrazy wojny), ale jednocześnie często nie wiemy, co się dzieje, na co patrzymy i gdzie jesteśmy. Krajobraz nie przypomina ziemskiego, nie wygląda też jako niebo. Chyba jesteśmy zupełnie gdzie indziej - na srebrnym globie?

As in Maryland, there’s a creeping sense of paranoia. Here, however, the lay is of the land is murkier and more sinister, with a captain facing insubordination and losing the respect of his men. Viewers are on their own, too: there isn’t a central, clarifying perspective. (via)
One abrupt dance sequence, set to an aggressive techno track, seems a direct homage to Claire Denis’ “Beau Travail” — still the gold standard for studies of soldiers lost (even when found) in the desert, though “The Wakhan Front” is a worthy admirer. “John Ford meets M. Night Shyamalan” - tak reżyser powiedział żartem, a mi, jak teraz patrzę na te kadry kojarzy się to z Grandrieux (w czym duża zasługa rewelacyjnego operatora).
Warto też nadmienić, że Cogitore napisał scenariusz wspólnie ze współpracownikiem Jacquesa Audiarda.
Part of the film's suspense lies in Bonassieu's obstinacy and growing mental frailty, explored by the filmmakers almost to the point of likening the man to Kurtz from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Here, too, some of the paranoia that seizes the French—a former colonial power—lies in their construction of “the other.” (via)
